But I like to think of it as a collection of steps we take to fill a void in our lives.
Life is too short to live with regrets. Or do you ask yourself: "What could have been?"
Each of us has the power to change our course.

At some point in their lives, most people have experienced some type of emotional or physical distress.
Maybe it was a family member who was diagnosed with cancer.
Or a car accident that leaves you disabled and unable to work.
Perhaps you grew up in a family where your parents had to go to a church or pantry to feed you.
And if you've been lucky enough to escape challenges like these, you might be an avid reader and follow the news... disgusted by the injustices happening in the world against people of different cultures, races, religions and genders.
There's one thing that speaks to all of us... and charities that do whatever it takes to raise money and raise awareness. But there is also room for more.
Starting a volunteer group can be as easy as creating a social media page.
A charity or non-profit organization is a bit more complicated, but definitely doable. You just have to do your research and find a clear course of action.
Just like starting a business, you need to have some kind of offer. A plan.
Thirteen years ago I started a group of volunteers. I posted on social media and community interest sites, which allowed me to gauge interest in the group.
My goal was to find all possible volunteer opportunities in our area and post them in one place to save people the time of having to search through multiple websites. We helped foster children, the homeless, food banks and soup kitchens, laid out gardens, cared for premature babies in the hospital.
In fact, I mean my husband at one of those events.
As we grew, we applied for nonprofit status. Registering your nonprofit for 501c3 status is afirst step.
My advice… find what moves you and create a page. Then take it from there!
2. Train for a marathon
Training for a marathon is both mental and physical preparation.
Whether you've been running 5K for a while, rightjust startedOn your journey... there are mental barriers associated with 26.2 miles that can seem quite overwhelming.
But there is also a great sense of achievement when you have reached your goal.
If you want to make the marathon one of your heart projects, you should start with a visit to your family doctor. Look around and make sure everything is fine from this point of view.
Then try joining a local group or finding a running partner. Someone who will hold you accountable every step of the way. To help you get out the door when you fancy a day off.

It seems that nowadays everyone is an authority on something.
Whether they're bragging about on their social media pages or commenting on blogs... most people have something to say. And everyone has an opinion.
But not everyone writes something worth reading.
If you're passionate about something or feel like you have some great advice or wisdom to share with the world, consider writing one of your passion projects.

4. Start taking photos
They say a picture says more than a thousand words.
And it's true.
Recording your life through photos can be an extremely healing experience.
Your photos can also touch others in ways they never imagined...since your photos speak to something inside them that they didn't know was there.
Whether you want to make photography a career or a lifelong hobby, photographing things that move gives you insight.
Start by getting a good camera and maybe some books on the subject. you can also takean online course.
You should also find professional photographers and study the work of those who inspire you.
Then start shooting.
Take photos of nature, people, places, objects, moments. If something moves you, take a picture of it.
Upload them to a cloud storage service...but also make sure you have a physical photo album (or two) handy to print out and showcase your best work.
Start portfolio.
Even if you don't become a world-class photographer, later in life you will have something to look back on... and relive the experiences that shaped you.
5. Complete a home renovation project
Home renovations can get very expensive.
You can also make a lot of money doing them for others...which is why some people choose to be contractors, landscapers, painters, and interior designers to make a living.
Not all success is tied to a university degree. Sometimes all it takes is hard work and the will to succeed.
Taking on a home renovation as your passion project could lead to the start of a new career...or just become one of those great life achievements you get to tell your kids about.
You can start renovating a room or two in your home. If you need plumbing or electrical work, it is best to consult a professional, family member or friend who is knowledgeable...if you are a true beginner.
Sure, you could watch a YouTube video... but electrical and plumbing breakdowns are no joke if you're not careful.
Painting, reupholstering furniture, laying tiles or floors... these are all good starting points if you want to try your hand at a DIY project.
Finally, you can become an expert and fulfill your dream of buying an old fixer-up top... to live on yourself or flip it.
From then on, the sky is the limit!
6. Fix an old car or motorcycle
Remember those old movies with "greases" under the hood... oil changes and carburetor repairs? The boys looked so cool.
What about motorcyclists? Wind in your face... nothing but the open road and opportunity ahead.
Buying and repairing an old car or motorcycle is one of the coolest passion projects... and one you can even share with your kid.
Speaking of bonding!
Start browsing the classified ads or online ads and choose the car of your dreams.
Then learn the basics by watching videos or reading books.
Talk to a mechanic at your local shop and give them pointers as to what you're working on... they might actually be interested in helping you or offering advice in exchange for you buying some of the parts from them.
Most people naturally want to help others, so don't be afraid to ask. The worst thing they can say is no."
And at the end of the day, your finished product will not only be a great thing to take with you on the go... but something to tell your kids about.

7. Speak a second language fluently

Whether you want to change careers, improve your CV, travel to a foreign country, improve your cognitive skills or simply want to make yourself more interesting to other people... becoming fluent in a second language is a heart project worth doing to be tackled. .

8. Start a YouTube channel
If you have kids over the age of 5, chances are they are obsessed with YouTube. I know mine are
They spend hours watching other kids play Minecraft and Roblox.
I don't understand
But what I understand is that the demand is there.
There's a YouTube channel for almost everything... and you can subscribe to it.
Gone is the notion that celebrities are made on TV. These days, celebrities take the form of internet sensations.
Whether you want to become famous or just want to listen, starting a YouTube channel can get you there.
Before it begins, just remember that you need to have a clear idea of what you want to convey.
This can include writing scripts and buying thecamera and soundEquipment.
This passion project is a reflection of you... so you don't want it to be second rate.
9. Start a podcast
Podcasters are the radio disc jockeys of this generation.
The big difference is that you don't have to be employed by a broadcaster or resort to pirate radio to get heard.
Anyone can start a podcast... and say almost anything they want. Also, I'm pretty sure they won't be censored in the same way as public broadcasters because they're not subject to the FCC.
And while theThe FTC has rulesPodcasters need to abide by this, certain things are definitely overlooked. Most laws have to do with disclosing your connection to affiliates or advertisers.
But for the most part, anything goes with podcasts.
So, in that sense...how do you start?
While you'll need to do some research, the basics to get you started are as follows:
- Identify your message, your content and your target audience
- Decide on a format
- Invest in the right audio equipment
- Record and edit your first episode
- Find a hosting site
- Start your podcast
If your podcast is attracting a good following, you can look for hosting services that will allow you to recruit paid subscribers. Not all hosts, like iTunes, allow you to charge listeners.
If you're happy to offer your words for free, you can still attract enough fans to get word of mouth with some of the "big boys" you might hire to broadcast on their behalf.
The potential is limitless.
So, start by gaining a following on social media and go from there.
10. Open an online or physical store
Have you ever dreamed of being your own boss?
Or do you have an idea or vision worth selling in your own business?
It doesn't all have to be theoretical.
It can become a reality if you get involved in this exciting project, now easier than ever thanks to the ability to do it online.
Of course, you should first do market research to make sure there is a need for your particular service or product.
If so, you should writea business plannext.
Then let your tax advisor advise you on which type of company structure makes the most financial sense for you. The structure of your business affects how much you pay in taxes, your ability to raise money, the documentation you need to file, and your personal liability.
You must choose a corporate structure before registering your company with the state. Most businesses are also required to obtain a tax identification number and apply for the appropriate licenses and permits.
Once you've done that, you can decide whether you want to start an online business or a physical location.
If you want to go online, you need to make sure you have a few things prepared before you get started. Things like:
- A website
- Pay Per Click Advertising
- Presence in social networks
- Junk-Mail
- Reliable inventory tracking and shipping service
There is also an option to partner with companies like Amazon or WalMart to become an authorized seller.
A physical business requires a lease or mortgage to start; However, it can pay off to have items that your customers can touch, see, and feel.
It honestly depends on what you're selling.
And you still need at least one website or social media page.
Eventually, you need to figure out how much money you need to get things started... and keep your business going until you start making a profit. If you don't have the funds, you will need to seek investors or consider a small business loan.
Your accountant can probably help you with this, too, if you're new to finance.
11. Making a documentary
Whether you want to make a difference in the world or are just interested in something or someone, documentaries are a great way to share your message with others.
All you need to get started is a dSLR camera, editing software, and the theme.

You must also check for copyright issues and have the people you photograph sign consent forms.
If you want to interview people, you may need to prepare some questions in advance.
And finally, after the filming is complete, you need to write a script for all the voiceover content.
Making documentaries can be an extremely rewarding experience... and it's also a heart project to do in your free time, like after work or at the weekend.
12. Get certified to teach something
Many people have considered teaching as a career at some point in life.
However, some types of instruction don't take place in a traditional classroom...and don't require a college degree.
Depending on the subject, teacher certification is a passion project that doesn't have to be time-consuming or require going to school.
Many times it can be done online. Or in person within a certain number of hours.

It is subjective and everyone sees it differently.

14. Run for local government
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
It's quite a famous quote, interpreted from something Mahatma Gandhi said to encourage people not to complain about what others are doing, but to fight for what they believe in.
Fight to make a difference.
And the decision to run for local government may be the passion project to get things done!
Positions in local government take many forms.
Offices are generally divided into two levels, counties (or districts) and parishes (or municipalities). Within these tears there are different positions.
Generally, county offices require election and include:

Municipal offices include:
- Parks and Recreation

- housing services
- Emergency Medical Services

- Transport
- Public works (roads, sewers, snow removal, signage, etc.)
These are all good places to start if you are considering a part-time job or a possible career in politics.

15. Become self-sufficient: garden, sun, wind
History has taught us that nothing lasts forever, nor is it set in stone.
Inflation, deflation... crop and water shortages.

These things are often beyond our control, especially when we have to rely on others.
